Here’s a friendly reminder:
-You cannot be sexist toward men. Sexism is based on a system of oppression. You CAN be discriminatory, rude, inconsiderate, and/or prejudiced against men but you CANNOT be sexist toward them.
today we all had to read an extract from the book we were reading in our english class (i am the only girl). i read the passage from ‘how to be a woman’ addressing females who argue against being a feminist/feminism etc… after i had finished reading a boy in my class was like ‘but she’s only included women in that, men can be feminists too!’ i agreed with this and explained that at other points in the book caitlin moran addresses and encourages male feminists too. despite this a discussion then occurred about ‘sexism towards males’ i tried to explain that this is NOT POSSIBLE as, as the text above states, sexism is based on a SYSTEM OF OPPRESSION, one that is institutionalised in our society. simply applying stereotypes to males and male advertising (the boy’s point) is not SEXIST, it is discrimination and wrong, however. anyway no one took notice of me and i failed to articulate myself and my point but the above text does so so yeah
when i read statuses and tweets saying things like ‘urgh i hate girls’ or, ‘girls are all bitches and slags’ it really saddens me. girl hate is one of the most horrid things, so the fact that it’s everywhere is awful. what makes it worse is when young girls feel like they have to ‘hate’ every other girl who isn’t their best friend, as that’s how society tells them to behave… i really believe that girls should be encouraged to support one another and to empower those around them. this cannot happen whilst ‘girl hate’ is just accepted and overlooked. i really want to sit down with every girl who has posted a status like those mentioned at the beginning and ask them if they truly believe that someone’s vagina dictates whether or not they are classed as a ‘bitch’ or someone to automatically ‘hate’. some boys sleep with a lot of people and so do some girls, why does that make them worthy of ‘hate’?? why does sexual activity degrade someone’s humanity?? why does what’s in my knickers lead me (and other women) to deserve that???? negativity breeds negativity and whilst i understand that some girls can be ‘bitches’, guess what, boys can be too!!!! someone’s gender doesn’t define who they are as a person.
i saw los campesinos! at the electric ballroom in camden this week and i think it might have been my favourite time of seeing them ever maybe
Just because I move through a public space does not mean that MY BODY is a public space.
